ABSTRACT

The three-dimensional structure of every biological macromolecule, be it protein or nucleic acid, is intimately associated with water. Water gives rise to hydrophobic interactions that stabilize the core of globular proteins (oil-drop model) and provide most of the stacking energy in double-helical nucleic acids.
